I can’t remember which one was what, but for either my Digital Media Development brief or my Final Major Project brief I wanted to create two monsters who would battle it out on the streets. I’ve not yet come up with how or why these monsters will be here, but I have had an idea which will come in a minute. Also, for the other brief I intend on working with Tom on making a sketch show with a bit of a difference.
So, the sketch show. At first, Tom has always had a concept he wanted to attempt to create, and I have always wanted to make a sketch show so the both of us teaming up is a good match. Tom’s idea is a sitcom with a sketch show within it if I remember correctly and his main ideas were on the sitcom side of the show, and mine has always been just a pure sketch show which caters for the other side. After having a chat with Annabeth and knowing I want to do compositing and special effects, she said about putting special effects in and pointed me to a show called The Wrong Door by the BBC. After watching countless clips of the show, Tom and I have had a few ideas on what to do and it looks like the idea is sailing. I don’t think we would be able to make a 30 minute pilot style episode, so time and content wise we will have to discuss but the style is there. I’m actually looking forward to it.
For the monster fight, again while speaking to Anna I mentioned a robot and robot fight but she recommended I chose more organic monsters than robots. I chose robots for two reason. 1: Making miniatures from whatever materials would be easier with straight edges and angles cuts which would also help create 3D versions in Maya. 2: Transformers. But, it was the Transformers which has drafted me away from robots. For the actuall story behind it, I’ve come up with a random plot so to speak and a possible style I could make it. So, firstly the plot is rather basic. The Earth is billions of years old and has seen a great many variations and types of species ranging from now back to it’s creation. There will be one dormant on Earth hidden in the Earths crust/cave/underground lair/city (still not decided what exactly) and the other is returning to Earth to take the planet over. Why? When the Earth was created these monsters fought for ownership of the planet – much like taking territory in a war. Obviously there are good and bad guys, and the bad guys left the planet in the attempt of taking over other planets, the good guys stayed in a bid to keep the Earth a peaceful planet. Billions of years later, the bad guy (note, one guy) returns to the spot they left from thinking he can automatically have Earth. All the other bad guys had died while fighting on other planets, so these two are the last of their kind. A fight ensues and all other aesthetics around that idea I’ve not yet come up with.
Another idea is to use the meteor crash (which wiped out the Dinosaurs) idea as a reason for organisms to leave the planet and one day return. But, how would I keep the one monster here? Why would they fight when one returns? Etc. I’ve yet to work out some things, lol.
There will only be two monsters in my work, but again, I have reasons. Mainly as it’s a one man project, anything more than two will be an absolute bitch to complete within the time frame I have to create this piece. Also, purely because it makes life simpler.
Also, the style I hope to make this in is a theatrical trailer, if I can. Anna said a 30 second piece of composting to a really, really high standard will fit the bill, but I feel that then it will just be two monsters fighting for 30 seconds and have nothing behind it. I feel that if I make a good quality theatrical style trailer, you will still have all that action but the added bonus of quickly telling you a story.
So, that’s my ideas so far, no a bit of early research.
